Dubai's demographic is largely expatriate. People come, people go. This leads to a transient population - where any opportunity to build on community needs to be maximised.

Overview

Wellx.ai, based in Dubai, is a platform that meets at the intersection of health-tech and insurance. Wellx empowers individuals with their digital-first approach to lead healthy lives, improving health outcomes and reducing long term healthcare costs.

There are currently 23,000 active users benefiting from the Wellx platform. By completing health challenges, users earn X coins, an in-app currency which they can redeem on prizes and rewards.

The Challenge

How and where can we create a sense of community within the Wellx platform?

My Approach

The project began with research into what motivates users to engage in communities and how they experience support within them. A survey was conducted to gather quantitative data on community engagement, followed by user interviews to gain deeper insights.

Competitive analysis was also essential in understanding market trends and customer expectations. Both direct and indirect competitors were assessed to identify best practices and potential gaps. Platforms like Wellable, YuLife, Nike Run Club, and Strava provided valuable insights into how accountability, social connection, and shared goals drive engagement.

Key Findings

Luxe Beauty, a luxury cosmetics brand, aimed to enhance its digital footprint to better reflect its premium products and sophisticated brand identity. The goal was to create a visually stunning, user-friendly website that would attract high-end customers and provide a seamless shopping experience.

Constraints

The main constraints I faced were the project's limited budget and short deadline. Initially, I considered using X coins, the in-app currency, to motivate users to engage with the community feature. However, during an early presentation with the stakeholder, I discovered that the business wanted to avoid using X coins as an incentive.

This realisation shifted my approach moving forward. It became crucial for me to fully understand the app’s existing capabilities to design a cost-effective solution, identify an alternative to X coins by exploring user motivations around community engagement, and maintain clear, consistent communication with developers to ensure the solution was feasible and straightforward to implement within the tight timeline.

Solution 1

The existing leaderboard feature emerged as a standout element with the potential to bring together a strong community. Since users on the leaderboard are already working toward a shared goal, this solution remained within project scope without requiring a completeley new feature.

By opting into leaderboard notifications when joining challenges, users receive friendly, motivating alerts whenever they move up in the rankings or are overtaken by others.

Solution 2

In addition to the leaderboard notification, a feature was introduced to strengthen team spirit. When discussing community with users, the recognition of group achievements emerged as a significant factor.

Over time, as users progress through challenges, they will receive milestone-based progress highlights, providing context for their achievements as a group.

Impact

By emphasising group achievements and incorporating leaderboard notifications, users are motivated to connect, track their progress, and feel a sense of accountability within a larger community.

Key Findings

In a community, knowing the common goal helps people understand how to contribute positively.

People seek accountability from members of their community.

Recognition of group achievements motivates people to perform better, helping people feel part of a bigger picture.
